Anonymous Launching A Site To Compete With Facebook

Facebook may have some serious competition, if Anonymous has anything to say about it. Yep, Anonymous is backing the launch of a new social media site with the express purpose of offering a site that promotes interaction, reach and will not encrypt your data.

The site, Minds.com, has the same basic options as any other social network site; you can send updates to your followers who can then comment or promote the posts if they choose to.

However, and this is where it differs from all the others that are currently available, it doesn’t exist to make money from collecting its users’ data. In fact it does the complete opposite and encrypts every single message on site so it can’t be collected or read by advertisers and governments.

The app’s other big features that contrast those of similar sites is that it rewards people for interacting with posts by voting, commenting or uploading. Users are given points that can then be exchanged for views.

The site describes the mechanism as a “network that rewards you with reach”. It is much more straightforward than the Facebook algorithm — which the company are always so vague about,  Zuckerberg’s site  works on a complicated mix of engagement, clicks and now the time spent on each individual post.

The site has been launched on desktop and mobile apps. However, in an interesting move the site has been made entirely open source, which means anyone can contribute to the appearance and general upkeep of it.
