Judge Reluctant to Punish Man Who Cheated on Wife, Then Set Her on Fire

The High Court in China has sentenced a man who set his wife on fire to just two years behind bars, even though the minimum sentence for such an egregious crime is five years. The wife apparently begged the judge to have mercy on her husband, even after suffering second and third degree burns on sixteen percent of her body.

It all started when Cheung Yin-ha had a stroke 12 years ago. She was left partially paralyzed and the resulting hardships for her and her husband led to an extra-marital affair. Instead of standing by his wife through sickness and health, 61-year-old Wong Yun-cheong stepped out on his marriage.

Though she is still receiving treatment for the injuries sustained during her husband’s attack, Cheung begged the judge to show mercy in court. “I want to see my husband. I hope he can come home early to take care of me. I shouldn’t have thrown a tantrum,” she said in a letter written on her behalf, according to The Daily Caller.

Saying that “the court doesn’t want to send the wrong message to society,” Justice Albert Wong Sung-hau handed down a lenient sentence of only two years. “It’s in Cheung’s best interests if her husband can take care of her as soon as possible,” stated the judge.
