On the same day, Hillary Clinton was dining with liberal billionaire George Soros, the Clinton campaign was sweating if they could snub a fundraiser for one of Soros’ activist groups.
The email chain was part of a 10th dump released by WikiLeaks on Monday.
Soros dined with Clinton on Oct. 7, 2014. He wanted Clinton to attend a fundraiser for America Votes, a liberal umbrella group that assists 400 organizations, including People for the American Way and the AFL-CIO. The group’s website is currently boasting it will help win states for progressive candidates.
But the 2014 election was underway and the Clinton team didn’t think helping out would matter. They were also worried about its effect on fundraising for Priorities USA, President Obama and the Democrats’ largest super PAC in 2012. Priorities is now supporting Clinton.
The issue was discussed by campaign Chairman Podesta, top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, and Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager.
In the end, it all came down to Soros and what Soros wanted.
“I would only do this for political reasons (ie to make Soros happy),” wrote Mook. “It’s very unclear to me how much AV will matter next cycle. And I haven’t seen then adding any value this cycle. I also worry a little it will cause donor confusion vis-a-vis Priorities.”
Mook and the Clinton campaign played it right. A year later, on Dec. 17, 2015, Soros gave $6 million to Priorities USA. He gave another $2.5 million on Aug. 31.
Soros is a longtime donor to liberal and Democratic causes. He swore his money would help defeat President George W. Bush in 2004.
