They said it was the fight that would never happen but how could they turn this down?
Floyd Mayweather is thought to be the greatest boxer of all-time. His style is similar to playing dodgeball with your fists. When he fought Manny Pacquiao, Manny found himself swinging and missing repeatedly, punching into the air.
Conor McGregor, on the other hand, has ruled combat sports like no athlete we have seen since Muhammad Ali. He draws huge crowds and record pay-per-views.
People have wondered what would happen if these two superstars met? Of course, the rules matter. With boxing rules, it is hard to imagine McGregor defeating Mayweather. On the other hand, Mayweather is a specialist rather than a brawler, and one would think that a MMA-stule fight would not go well for him. Do you remember what happened when Randy Couture fought the world-class boxer James Toney? It was not pretty for Toney and the fight ended quickly.
Earlier, it was reported that Mayweather offer to pay McGregor $15 million himself to fight him. No one knows if the offer was sincere or if it was simply hype. Now, UFC President Dana White has entered the discussion, and he has made the two athletes and offer that it seems would be difficult to refuse.
In a recent appearance on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd, White declared that he wanted to “cut out the bs.” In short, he offered the two a massive sum of money to face each other in a bout.
“I’ll tell you what Floyd, here’s a real offer and I’m the guy, I’m the guy that can actually make the offer and I’m actually making a real offer. We pay you $25 million, we’ll pay Conor $25 million and then we’ll talk about pay-per-view at a certain number. There’s a real offer,” White revealed.
Mayweather has been retired since 2015 and has indicated that the only thing that tempts him out of retirement is the possibility of fighting 28-year-old McGregor.
“Only thing I’m probably interested in is the Conor McGregor fight,” Mayweather said. “I’m a businessman, and it makes business sense. I believe in what me and [adviser] Al Haymon talk about every day – I believe in working smarter, not harder.”
“We tried to make the Conor McGregor fight,” Mayweather said. “They know what my number is. My number is a guaranteed $100million (£81m). That was my number.
“We are willing to give him $15million (£9.7m) and then we can talk about splitting the percentage – the back end – on the pay-per-view. But of course, we’re the ‘A side’. How can a guy talk about making 20 or 30 million if he has never made 8 million or 9 million in a fight?”
McGregor does have a boxing license now, so it could happen! Time will tell.
