When Jennifer Knapp Wilkinson needed some household items, she went to Walmart and started shopping. But Jennifer is not able to walk around the store like most other customers. Because she is morbidly obese, she rides an electric scooter.
But when she tried to reach for something that was a bit out of reach, Jennifer started to fall. And instead of offering to help the obese woman, another shopper snapped a photo and shared it all over the internet.
The photo went viral. But Jennifer did not appreciate how she was the brunt of the joke. She shot back with a statement that urges other people to respect fat people. Because they “are people too.” Check out her response and what happened next…
You might have seen Jennifer Wilkinson’s photo before. It became viral as part of an internet meme that was shared around the globe.
But now that Jennifer has revealed the truth behind the image of her falling off the scooter at Walmart, you might second guess your laughing. The image, which appeared on the webpage that ridicules customers of the giant retailer, People of Walmart, it first went viral about four years ago.
Now Wilkinson has spoken up about it. Although it went viral four years ago, it still pains her every day.
“It is never just harmless fun to laugh at someone,” she revealed through tears.
The 39-year-old mother doesn’t just suffer from obesity. She has a spinal condition, anxiety, ADHD, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and struggles to lose weight every day.
Over the years, she has scrolled through thousands of comments ridiculing the way she looks – and it hurts her.
“The worst thing about this photo is that people think a fat woman tipped over a cart because she was too lazy to get out of the cart to get the case of soda,” Wilkinson wrote in a candid post on Quora.
“I have a condition in my spine called Spondylolisthesis. The most common symptoms in the legs include a feeling of vague weakness associated with prolonged standing or walking. In my case, the longer I stand the more numb and weak my legs become. I have been known to fall because of this condition.”
