‘Operation Gotham Shield’: The Fear of Nuclear/EMP Attack? [WATCH]

To ensure the preparedness of the United States for possible nuclear/EMP attack from its opposing nations, a host of federal and local agencies is conducting nuclear response drills known as the Operation Gotham Shield 2017, which is underway from Monday through Thursday of this week.

FEMA is the lead agency, and the states participating include: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Washington. The various drills will bring federal agencies such as the Department of Defense, FBI, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers together with state and local entities like the Greater New York Hospital Association and ambulance response teams from across New Jersey.

FEMA spokeswoman Lauren Lefebvre told Gothamist that the drills, which are theoretical and do not involve actual volunteers posing as victims, will simulate a scenario in which a 10,000 ton improvised nuclear device goes off on the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel. MetLife Stadium will serve as the primary response center, and the event will be “focused on interagency and multi state coordination during a nuclear incident.”

There have been many speculations why the government launches this preparedness operation. Some people think this a response to the threat from its opposing nations especially that the tension over the recent nuclear test in North Korea continue to rise.

In an article published in The Controversial Files, a Russian or a North Korean submarine was reportedly spotted last week off the coast of California with the consequence that the US and Canadian anti-submarine warplanes were rapidly converging off the coast of California, including Multiple low-flying aircraft a Navy EP-3E Aries II, which is used for electronic surveillance, a Navy P-3C Orion, which is used for submarine spotting, and a Boeing P-8 Poseidon used for anti-submarine warfare off California, followed up with the news that Russia claims it can wipe out the US Navy with a single ‘electronic bomb’, the fear of an EMP or nuclear attack is not unfounded.

Lefebvre stressed that the preparedness exercises are not related to recent concerns about nuclear missile tests in North Korea. She said: “This is something that’s been planned well in advance of anything going on in current climate. It’s just a test of our ability to communicate across federal, state, and local levels.”

John Grembowiec, Chairman of the New Jersey EMS Task Force, clarified Tuesday that Gotham Shield should have absolutely no impact on anyone else going about their business in the tri-state area this week.
