Cowboy Lassoes Up Some Street Justice For This Would Be Thief

A man allegedly attempting to steal a bike in front of a Walmart in Southern Oregon was foiled by a man on a horse Friday morning when the mounted rider lassoed the would-be thief and kept him roped up until police arrived, officials said.

The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. in front of the Walmart in Eagle Point, about 12 miles northeast of Medford, said Officer Chris Adams, a spokesman for the local police department.

The bicycle was stolen from a bike rack outside a Walmart in Eagle Point, a town about 170 miles south of Eugene, Oregon, at around 10amon Friday morning. The woman who owned the bike and several others gave chase on foot but were unable to catch him.

A Rancher named Robert Borba chased an alleged bicycle thief in Southern Oregon on horseback only to wrap him in a lasso and hold him until police arrived. Victorino Arellano-Sanchez, 22, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge and held on $3,000 bail.

Borba told The Medford Mail Tribune he “seen this fella trying to get up to speed on a bicycle. I wasn’t going to catch him on foot. I just don’t run very fast.”

That’s when he grabbed a horse named Long John and gave chase.

Arellano-Sanchez ditched the bike as he struggled with the gears and ran on foot. Soon afterward, Borba had him roped up.

Here’s the clincher: As Borba high-tailed it after Arellano-Sanchez, the alleged bike thief incredulously asked, “Do you have a badge to do this?”

After Borba had Arellano-Sanchez tied down, he phoned Eagle Point police, who arrived within 15 minutes. The officer who responded told the Mail Tribune he’s never seen anything like this during his time on the force.

“That’s a first for me,” Sgt. Darin May said.

Borba’s wife, Alyssa, said her husband’s actions probably come as second nature — he’s a rancher who used to compete in rodeos. As for what he was doing at Walmart on Friday morning?

He was just trying to buy some dog food when he noticed the alleged theft happening.
