Wanted Man Surrenders To Police With Donuts And A Bagel [VIDEO]

A Michigan man who reportedly promised to surrender to local police if their Facebook post was shared 1,000 times stayed true to his word – and brought along a dozen doughnuts and one bagel as part of the deal.

Michael Martin Zaydel, 21-year-old, turned himself in to the Redford Township Police Department for several outstanding misdemeanor warrants late Monday, 10 days after making the social media challenge — which included promises to clean up public school property and bring cops a dozen doughnuts.

Redford Township Police Department (RTPT) wrote: “Mr. Zaydel. AKA Champagne Torino is in custody after walking into RTPD with a dozen donuts and one bagel!”

Police added: “This evening, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Zaydel made good on his promise to turn himself into RTPD for his outstanding warrants.

He walked in on his own, and not only did he bring the donuts, he brought one bagel! We would again like to express our gratitude for the support of all who followed this, shared it, and left us positive feedback,” the department wrote on its Facebook page.

Zaydel, who also go by the alias Champagne Torino, laid out his challenge to the department on Oct. 6 and officers very happily accepted the dare, writing: “He promised us donuts! You know how much we love Donuts!”

The post had been shared more than 4,400 times as of Tuesday and racked up more than 460 comments. In a separate post on Oct. 6, Sgt. Duane Gregg and Officer Jennifer Mansfield explained their reasoning behind the challenge, saying it was “fun” and “educational” at the same time.

“It is amazing the support we get from the community,” the officers wrote. “Mr. ‘Torino’ gave us a challenge. That challenge was accepted. He may or may not be a man of his word. It is our experience everyone gets caught at some point. He has drawn a lot of attention to himself, and that makes it hard to hide from reality. The important thing to be seen here is the support of the community, and the desire to help.”

Zaydel, who was jailed overnight, is expected to appear for a hearing at the 17th District Court on Tuesday, police said. It was not immediately clear what charges he faced for the outstanding warrants.
