After the Valentine’s Day mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 students and staff, the Governor’s office confirmed Florida will be launching an investigation of the law enforcement’s response.
The investigation comes up at a request from Governor Rick Scott. After a leaked video shows at least one deputy in a defense position outside the school in Parkland, Florida where the massacre occurred, but never went in to engage the gunman, controversy arose. Republican lawmakers wrote a letter to the governor asking him to suspend the Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, a Democrat, for the use of “incompetence an neglect” of duty from his officers.
The Sheriff has agreed to the investigation and will fully cooperate. “This independent outside review will ensure public confidence in the findings,” Israel said. Even the Coral Springs Police Department officers were surprised to arrive at the scene of the shooting and see the Broward deputies still outside with their guns drawn and standing behind their vehicles.
According to ijr:
Michelle Cook, the police chief for the Atlantic Beach, Florida, Police Department, had a brutal response to former Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson, who did not enter the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School building to confront suspect Nikolas Cruz.
“If you are a police officer and you think to yourself for even one second that you will not be able to run towards the gunfire…please quit now,” Cook posted on her social media:
“If you are the officer there, and innocent people are dying, and your backup is way off, you have an obligation to go in,” she told News 4 Jax.

Cook further made a plea for first responders to be proficient and train for active shooter scenarios:
1 of 3 -If you’re a first responder, Please continue to train & be proficient in the active shooter response. This includes tactical & incident management of a scene. If you don’t know what “rescue task force” , “ambulance exchange point”, ” contact team” , “tactical/5th man”,
