EPIC: AN OPEN LETTER TO ABC AND ROSEANNE

Reported SF&L| This may be an unpopular opinion, hell you may even agree with me here, but it’s OK that Roseanne was canceled.

That is not to say I support the move, in the least. It’s a good show and in its heyday did a decent job at portraying real Americans. The show has always, in some way shape or form, been centered around controversial ideas. From its first table reading where Roseanne Barr realized she had to take a more hands-on approach with the program all the way to the “racist” tweet she blasted off mere days ago. Roseanne has never been one to turn away from an opportunity to lay down a joke, regardless of how it landed with the masses.

And it’s OK that the show was canceled. It sucks, and I may not watch ABC again for a very long time, but this is about our First Amendment rights, right?

Of course, it is!

Now I know that the First Amendment, in particular, our Freedom of Speech is about our freedom to speak out against the actions of our government that we may not agree with. But one could (perhaps should) argue that in the heated political climate we live in today it easily extends beyond its original intent and meaning.

Let’s take a look at the First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Pretty cut and dry, but still I think my above-said opinion holds weight within the power the First Amendment grants us. If the powers-at-be over at ABC decide they want to end their cash cow over a freaking joke they have that right. If you decide to boycott ABC (American Broadcasting Company) due to their decision, YOU HAVE THAT RIGHT!

If NFL players decide to kneel during the National Anthem, don’t they have that right? If fans and even owners decide to do something about that, say like boycotting the NFL, don’t we grant them the ability to do that?

This, my friends, is where Liberals have it ALL WRONG. They view right wingers ability to simultaneously support NFL team owners actions against their players for exercising their First Amendment rights and the ability to boycott a network over the decision to cancel a show over it’s star’s own First Amendment rights as some form of hypocrisy. They dance around, prancing, with dumb little memes like this:

You see what I mean? To them, this is unacceptable. But I’m here to tell you both are doable! both are acceptable! That is the beauty of our Constitution. That is why we’re right, in almost every meaning of the word. That is what the Left, all too often, gets wrong about our country, our Constitution, our Founding Father’s intent. The whole nation is built on the idea that we can have a difference of opinion… it’s written right into the Constitution.

But for them, everything IS one way street. Their way or the highway, so to speak.

Roseanne recently tweeted to her supporters asking them to stop defending her but I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with Roseanne on this one. While the joke may not have landed, while the joke may have been racist (to some? to all?) I’ll always support the Constitution.

Roseanne Barr

@therealroseanne

hey guys, don’t defend me, it’s sweet of you 2 try, but…losing my show is 0 compared 2 being labelled a racist over one tweet-that I regret even more.

I’m sorry, Roseanne, but again I’m going to have to disagree with you here. I understand the place you’re coming from. I can’t imagine how you feel about yourself right now but I support you, and I would ask ABC to not cancel you.
