Some reality shows are more realistic than others. The police show, “Cops,” as a case in point shows real cops and robbers (and other criminals), but seldom does the violence recorded turn deadly. That is what happened in a recent filming.

According to USA Today, a shootout between police and an armed broke out during the filming of an episode in Omaha last night. One crew member was shot and injured. The suspect, who was also shot, died of his injuries.

The “Cops” crew was with police who responded to an armed robbery call at a Wendy’s restaurant around 9:20 p.m. CT when the shooting took place. The suspect and the “Cops” employee were both hit in the exchange and taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

The suspect was declared dead at the hospital, while no more information was given about the condition of the “Cops” employee.

The restaurant’s windows were riddled with bullet holes and the street was closed for several hours, the Omaha World-Herald reports.

Deputy Police Chief Dave Baker spoke with reporters after the rare shooting, telling them “We will have more on [the camera man’s] condition, as well as any other details on this tomorrow. We have a lot of ground to cover here tonight and officers will continue the investigation throughout the night.”

The show, for those unfamiliar with it, embeds camera crews with police units. There is no narration, other than the dialogue between the officers and those they come into contact with. The show is described on its website as one of the first “true and unscripted reality shows.”

The show airs on Fox.
