Alicia Keir, 24, of DeMotte, Indiana, pled guilty to giving birth to a baby girl and then leaving it for dead under a bed in the Carnival Dream cruise ship in 2011.
An Indiana mom faces prison time after confessing to leaving a baby girl she gave birth to on a Caribbean cruise ship to die underneath a bed.
Alicia Keir was 20 years old when she boarded the Carnival Dream vessel in October 2011 to celebrate a friend’s birthday, reports NWI.com.
The now 24-year-old, from DeMotte, knew she was pregnant— but her friends did not.
She went into labor and gave birth by herself inside her cabin on the second day of the vacation, before wrapping the newborn in a towel and hiding her beneath the bed.
Cleaners discovered the dead tot the following day after the ship arrived at the port of St. Maarten.
A doctor was called and determined that the girl, who’d been born healthy, had died from “exposure and lack of care.”
Keir boarded the Carnival Dream ship in 2011, knowing that she was pregnant, but her friends did not. After giving birth to the child and then abandoning it, a cleaner discovered the dead baby the next day.
Keir flew home after the infant was found.
She was arrested and, after an almost four year legal process, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in federal court on Wednesday.
“She did not move. She did not make a sound,” she told U.S. District Judge Rudy Lozano. “I should have gotten help,” she added.
Keir faces up to eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine when she is sentenced on August 20.
