A New York City teen has $45,000 dollars in her pocket courtesy of a settlement that was reached after she filed a lawsuit for the way she and a friend were treated by a police officer.

Nineteen-year-old Natalie Erlich told her side of the 2013 story to the New York Post and said that officer José Peinan was just mad that she shut down his advances and consequently had her and a friend detained for 19 hours.

Erlich said that Peinan was flirting with her.

“I had on a camouflage hat and [Peinan] had on camouflage pants. He said, ‘We match.’ I brushed him off and I laughed,” she said.

Peinan was in plain clothes.

Erlich says Peinan followed her around the corner and “said something slick like, ‘Where are you going?’” She then asked if he was a cop, he supposedly said “maybe” and she replied that’s “a cop answer.”

Then Erlich and a friend were arrested. She asked Peinan why and he allegedly replied, “You know why — you’re being a smartass.”

The lawsuit also alleged that a male officer was “touching her breasts” when he was frisking her. She and her friend Marie Gonzalez were jailed and released at 11 a.m. the next day.

At the time, the teens were charged with obstruction of governmental administration, charges that have been dropped.

According to the New York Post, “Peinan […] has been named in three other suits [and] the city has been forced to settle.”

As an aside, Erlich should really consider cleaning up her Twitter account.
