A spokesperson from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management tells NBC 10 Salty Brine State Beach in Narragansett was evacuated around noon on Saturday after an explosion occurred just after 11:15 a.m.

DEM crews were called after several 911 calls were received by Narragansett police and fire departments for reports of a possible explosion, rocks shifting and reports of a woman in her 50’s who was thrown several feet into the air from the sand, possibly hitting the rocks. The woman was transported by rescue and her condition is not known at this time.

DEM says the explosion came from under the sand and the bomb squad was called in.

A spokesperson for DEM says the bomb squad and state Fire Marshall is investigating the situation and are discussing whether to close George’s of Galilee as a precaution. Both crews remain on scene to determine the cause of the explosion. NBC 10 will provide further information as it becomes available.
