In the aftermath of the viral video that showed Planned Parenthood officials talking about the sale of harvested fetal tissue, the organization has apologized for the tone and statements that were shown, but continued to defend their work against the video they describe as “heavily-edited.”
Roger Evans, the organization’s senior legal officer, released a letter that he submitted Congressional Republicans on Monday, saying that the secretly filmed video was part of a “decade-long pattern of illegal harassment” by anti-abortion groups. Evans went on about how the Center for Medical Progress has a longstanding animosity towards the company, and that they were planning to release more videos in the future in order to endanger “our patients’ privacy and dignity”:
A group of extremists who have intimidated women and doctors for years — in their agenda to ban abortion completely — are not ‘documenting’ misdeeds; they are trying to create them, quite unsuccessfully…From all that is known today, it appears that the only people who have broken laws are the extremists who have been hounding women and Planned Parenthood doctors for years.
Evans finished the letter by insisting that Parenthood had no intention of becoming a part of Biomax’s “sham procurement contracts,” and that they would not yet grant an interview with Dr. Deborah Nucatola, who was prominently featured in the video.
