There are times when police officers are caught saying or doing things in bad behavior, and then there are times when things get blown out of proportion from a relatively harmless moment. This is the latter.
Florida police officer Andrew Ricks was fired from his job this week after he was caught on video getting on stage to help do vocals for a death metal band. Ricks was still in uniform when joined Vital Remains for their song, “De-christianize,” and the trouble seemed to start for him when he sang “let the killing begin” as part of the lyrics.
The Orlando Sentinel reported that Police Chief Cecil Smith was sent the video shortly afterwards, and he relieved Ricks of duty on Wednesday before he formally gave his resignation to city officials. Ricks was never in trouble before this video emerged, but spokesperson Ronny Neal said that the chief wanted to make sure the citizens didn’t take issue with what he said.
“An incident of this nature erodes the thin fibers of trust which already exist between the community and the police and it will not tolerated within the Sanford Police Department,” Smith said in a statement yesterday.
