The incident occurred after 6 p.m. on Dec. 20, Las Vegas Now reported. Police believe a woman in a 1996 Oldsmobile sedan intentionally drove onto the sidewalk in at least two or three different locations, striking at least 26 people along the way.
Among the 26 people injured, one person died from injuries and six are in critical condition. Another victim is an 11-year-old child.
A witness told the news station she saw the woman hit numerous people, including children. She also said that some men tried to stop the car to no avail.
“I saw men running after her, yelling, ‘Stop, stop!’ As she was passing, we saw people running after her. Everyone was so frantic and just running around.”
The suspect fled the scene, but police were able to track her down in East Flamingo. She had a 3-year-old child in the vehicle with her. That child was not injured.
The driver’s name has not been released at this time. She is currently in jail and charges are pending. Homicide officials are looking at several surveillance videos.
Police are investigating whether the woman was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the incident, CNN reported. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department deputy chief Brett Zimmerman said the incident is not considered an act of terrorism, but added that they are treating it as an “intentional act.”
