On Wednesday a masked gunman attempted to rob a restaurant in Miramar, Florida, and might have gotten away with it, had it not been for intervention from an unexpected source.
Just before 6:00 p.m on Wednesday the unidentified man barged into Captain Max Seafood wearing a ski mask and gloves and brandishing a gun.
After an “exchange of words,” an unnamed restaurant employee brought out his own weapon and thwarted the robbery attempt — by shooting the would-be robber dead, according to the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel.
Miramar Police spokeswoman Tania Rues confirmed that a “restaurant employee fired several shots and killed the suspect.”
Police were investigating the incident. It was not immediately known whether the masked man fired his weapon before he was shot and killed.
The employee was seen getting into the back of a police car on Wednesday night while the body of the masked man remained inside the restaurant.
According to Rues, no one except the masked gunman was injured during the attempted robbery.
“Luckily, only the suspect was hurt, but there are other situations where innocent bystanders could have been hurt as well,” Rues said. “We would hope that people do not take the situation into their own hands.”
We understand the police department’s position on this issue, but in this case, have to disagree. It seems like a very good thing this restaurant employee took things into his own hands.
The police cannot be everywhere at once — and they weren’t at Captain Max Seafood when this masked gunman walked in. This restaurant employee may have saved lives.
And that’s precisely what the Second Amendment is for.
