A St. Louis, Missouri restaurant worker just lost her job after she referred to two customers as “Black Couple” on their receipt.
According to the receipt, the event happened on Saturday at Patrick’s Westport Grill.
After having a drink at the restaurant, the couple was ready to pay their bill. But when the waitress brought over their receipt, they noticed it said “Black Couple In” where the table number would usually go.
The owner of the restaurant, Patrick Hanon, issued a public apology after the receipt went viral making thousands of people angry. This is what he wrote on Facebook: “I, Patrick Hanon, sincerely apologize for the unacceptable act that is not symbolic of our company values or beliefs. We do not tolerate this behavior and have a zero tolerance for this behavior. This is not our management style and have addressed this issue. We are reevaluating our hiring, training, and screening process so that we develop the most professional of individuals. This was an isolated event which we do not and will not tolerate. Patrick’s is a family owned business and during our 33 years I have always treated my customers as family and encourage my employees to do so as well. We appreciate our loyal family members and our new family members.”
In the comments section of the post, Hanon said that the employee has been fired and that she made an “extremely bad decision when she could not remember her table numbers.”
Other people were shocked to see that the bill came out for an extra $1.50 unlisted charge suspecting the employee was charging the black customers more. The restaurant has confirmed that this was for a double shot of alcohol.
The restaurant also removed the option to label receipts with anything other than the table number.
What do you think about this receipt? Is it offensive?
Way to stand up for your employees, guy… Sheesh.
