Video showed workers at a New Jersey restaurant celebrating when they thought they won the $949 million Powerball jackpot.
The only problem: They had a ticket for Saturday’s drawing, but were looking at Wednesday’s numbers.
The 42 employees of Grissini’s Restaurant in Englewood Cliffs had pooled their money to buy $210 of tickets.
Bartender Charles Poveromo said he got the numbers via text message from a friend, who apparently failed to realize the Powerball website hadn’t been updated with the latest numbers.
But in those 20 minutes before the realization set in, the workers were in a state of bliss. YouTube video shows them hugging and jumping on top of each other. A dishwasher reportedly announced his immediate resignation and threw down his apron.
Poveromo then called his wife, who said they should double check the numbers. That’s when they realized they were from the wrong day.
He said it was like “getting punched in the stomach” and “a balloon deflating.”
That dishwasher picked up his apron and got back to work.
