A new hashtag has emerged, #boobsforbernie. What does it mean, and, more importantly, is it relevant?
Here’s how it started: Margaret Ellen Bradford posted the following on her Facebook page:
Hi Ellen DeGeneres!
This past week my daughter and I got to attend a U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders’ rally. While there, she got hungry like babies do, and unbeknownst to me at the time a reporter took this photo of us. After the rally, Bernie and Jane O’Meara Sanders both thanked me for doing what mothers do and taking care of my daughter when she needed her mom, even if that meant nursing in public!
After sharing the story that went with the photo, it went unexpectedly viral! I’ve since had news stories show up in Cleveland, Arizona, Florida, Texas, and others plus countless blogs. I’ve seen it on over 50 different high traffic Facebook pages. I’m being sent new articles by the hour! I’ve gotten a lot of hate mail and a lot more love mail, but the one thing I don’t have is a picture of my beautiful 6 month old Bernie baby with Bernie and Jane Sanders! Any chance you could help me fulfill my wish, and help us get our photo with Bernie?
Now others are joining the discussion. We Are The Media is responsible for this gem:
Beautiful story from Margaret! She was breastfeeding and caught the eye of the campaign. Jane was so happy to see another mom breastfeeding in public especially at their rally and Nina Turner couldn’t hold back and said to her “Who can resist kissing a breastfed baby all chunky and happy from her mama’s milk.”
I have to admit, I don’t quite see the connection between this woman breastfeeding and National/World issues. Am I missing something? How is this woman any different from any other voter?
