A Phoenix woman was arrested and faces a manslaughter charge stemming from a 2014 crash that killed a 5-year-old child.
When Aaronessa Keaton was booked into Glendale City Jail and informed that a child had died in the accident, she told officers “shit happens,” according to a court document.
Keaton was 8 months pregnant at the time of the Feb. 28, 2014 collision.
According to KPHO, Phoenix Police Sgt. Vince Lewis said thatclaims toxicology tests found that Keaton and her child had Benzodiazepines and THC in their system at the time of the collision.
Phoenix police filed charges in January and a grand jury handed up an indictment. A warrant for arrest was issued in late February.
Keaton was arrested by Glendale Police during a traffic stop on Monday after police conducted surveillance on her vehicle.
According to the police report, 24-year-old Keaton was the driver of a Ford Explorer heading southbound when it side-swiped a Chevy Malibu in the northbound lanes.
The Malibu began to rotate counterclockwise and it eventually came to a stop. Miraculously, no one in the Malibu was hurt.
Keaton’s vehicle continued across the northbound lanes and collided nearly head-on with a 2007 Nissan Frontier.
Keaton was rushed to a hospital and underwent a C-section.
Children in the backseat of the Nissan included a 5-year-old who was killed and another child who was injured.
