After suffering regular panic attacks, British woman Amber Smith wanted the world to see the “normal” side of mental health with these before and after selfies. The top shows a made-up, social-media ready Smith, while the bottom image shows her just after experiencing a severe panic attack due to anxiety. In the post, Smith stressed that the stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health can be very detrimental to those suffering its debilitating effects; “I’ve been battling with anxiety and depression for years and years and there’s still people that make comments like ‘you’ll get over it.’”

The post urged people be nice to one another, to refrain from judgement and spread awareness. In an age when the unrealistic selfie dominates social media, Smith is tackling the negative conversation that often surrounds mental health through this heartbreaking image.
