A chaotic shootout between two gunmen armed with assault rifles left one innocent bystander and one suspect dead and at least six people injured Sunday morning.
Houston police responded to reports of gun blasts around 10:15 a.m. at the Memorial Drive Tire & Auto Center on the west side of the Texas city, a local ABC affiliate reported. A SWAT team swiftly responded to the scene as well.
A regular customer at the auto center, believed to be in his 50s, was killed shortly after he drove to the shop to get his car detailed, police spokesman John Cannon said at a press conference on Sunday.
“That’s when the suspect showed up, and just shot him, for no apparent reason,” Cannon told reporters.
The rampage continued, as the gunman started opening fire on anything near that moved.
When authorities first arrived to the wild exchange of fire, the deceased gunman — armed with a pistol and an AR-15— shot at police officers, spraying bullets on at least five police cruisers and even striking a Houston Police department helicopter, hitting it up to five times.
