A controversial photo was snapped this past weekend at Hilton Head Island, SC that has people buzzing on what it could actually be. There are many theories, but the most obvious idea that pops in your head may be completely off.
According to Fox Carolina:
Many tried to beat the heat at the beach on Saturday in Hilton Head Island, but some beach-goers were a little hesitant to go in the water after a specific picture surfaced Friday on social media, and went viral.
The picture, captured on Hilton Head, shows what appears to be a large animal fin in the water near the shoreline. The photo has now been shared over 43,000 times, and is stirring much debate over what it is exactly.
There’s no question that sharks are nearby in the ocean, but shark experts say the chances of them attacking you are slim to none, while the odds of seeing them towards the surface are very rare.
Captain Chip Michalove of Outcast Sport Fishing charters boats daily for those looking to catch a shark.
Captain Chip says although there are about 30 species of sharks in these waters – including Hammerhead, Tiger, Lemon and Great White – there is also other marine life like manatees, dolphins and sting rays, which could possibly be what we saw in the picture.
“When sting rays glide through the water, their wings occasionally come above the surface, making a triangular shape,” said Captain Chip.
Even though you probably won’t see a shark from your beach chair, experts warn against swimming near schools of fish, shrimp boats, or in channels like Port Royal Sound or Saint Helena.
What do you think it could be… If that is actually a shark it’s HUGE!
