A gunman opened fire in a crowded office building in Lower Downtown Tuesday afternoon, critically wounding a woman before killing himself, Denver police said. Officers closed off surrounding streets in LoDo as they investigated the shooting and emergency crews poured into the area.
Dozens of office workers fled the Alliance Center at 1536 Wynkoop Street after the shooting at 2:43 p.m., while others sheltered in place. Denver police cleared the shooting scene within an hour. The building houses a number of left-leaning political and environmental groups.
One woman was taken to Denver Health Medical Center in critical condition, said Dr. Eric Lavonas, chief of emergency medicine at Denver Health.
Police spokesman Doug Schepman said the gunman shot the victim several times and then shot himself. Schepman said the victim was targeted by the gunman and that the shooting was not random.
“When the officers discovered the suspect, he was already down from a self-inflicted wound,” Schepman said.
Kate Hawley, who works for the Rocky Mountain Institute on the third floor of Alliance Center, heard the shooting.
