Portland police have identified the man shot and killed by a woman in her house early Sunday as a 59-year-old Gresham resident who may have been suffering from a mental illness.
David Daniel McCrary died of a single gunshot wound, Sgt. Pete Simpson said in a news release.
Authorities don’t know why McCrary broke into 33-year-old Tara-Alexis Ford’s home in Southeast Portland, he said. Ford has no connection to McCrary and didn’t live nearby.
Simpson said that while McCrary doesn’t have a significant criminal history, a recent report indicates that he was possibly struggling with mental health issues. Simpson said he could not elaborate any further.
Police said Ford shot and killed McCrary inside her Powellhurst-Gilbert home sometime before 1:47 a.m. Sunday morning after coming home to find McCrary in her 10-year-old daughter’s bedroom.
