HILLSBORO, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Two burglars in Jefferson County found themselves staring down the barrel of a shotgun held by an elderly woman and are lucky to be alive to tell about it, police say.

Early in the morning on July 17, a 77-year-old woman heard a noise in her house in the area of Rock Creek Road and Highway 30, detectives say.

“She grabs the shotgun and goes back to where she hears a noise and finds two individuals inside one of her spare bedrooms,” explained Detective Sergeant James Kauzler with Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

When the suspects saw the gun, they jumped out of the bathroom window they used to get into the house, police say.

Doris Jackson, 87, is a neighbor to the 77-year-old. Jackson says she is concerned about the crime but not afraid. Her message to criminals is do not come back because that victim is not the only senior citizen in the neighborhood with a gun.

“How about a nine millimeter. I wouldn’t have a shotgun but I have some more besides that, I’ve got some guns you know,” said Jackson.

The sheriff’s department says they would prefer you to call 911 if you hear an intruder and leave the work to the professionals. But the department also mentions they acknowledge that Jackson and her neighbors have their right to protect themselves.

Authorities say the burglars left behind their burglary tools and a cellphone. Thanks to the cellphone, investigators say they have identified a 28-year-old man as a person of interest, but no one has been arrested yet.
