Some 100 experts and affiliates in the sectors of technology and media from United Nations bodies and law enforcement agencies have recently gathered for a two-day seminar on human trafficking in the Middle East.
The end result, summarized in a report of the United Nations published this month, shows that ISIS has enslaved more than 5,000 Yazidis, members of a small Kurdish community in the Middle East, and takes advantage of several internet and app tools sell slaves online.
In particular women and girls yazide are typically attracted to areas of conflict with the promise of getting to become “wives” of ISIS fighters, only to be held as slaves and then be sold or exchanged.
According to the United Nations, the ISIS has used Telegram to make slaves of online auctions, with pictures of captured women and girls who list their age, marital status, current location, and the selling price.

“The social media platforms are used to facilitate trade and traffic,” said a representative of the United Nations earlier this year. “Women and children are offered the same online forum where they sell guns and grenades”
The social media sites have long struggled to eradicate the online terrorism; the next step is to extend aid to the victims. The UN report suggests the authorities to take advantage of the same platforms they use traffickers to raise awareness and discourage the spread of modern slavery.
Finally, the recent United Nations report says that social media should work to identify, based on the content of their feed and geo-referenced data, specific individuals who may be vulnerable to human trafficking, and integrate the warnings and service information (such as details to a toll free number or app assistance) in their feeds.
