Princess Juliana International Airport on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin has become famous for boasting the ‘world’s scariest approach’. Every day hundreds of holidaymakers flock to Maho Beach to stand under massive passenger jets as they fly just feet above their heads.
But this landing was more hair-raising than most as the heart-stopping footage shows. Thrillseekers watched gobsmacked as the Westjet Boeing 737 appeared to almost hit the water as it approached the runway.
The pilot was forced to power up back into the sky as it became clear the jet couldn’t land. The plane makes a safe landing on the second attempt 45 minutes later.
The video footage was filmed on March 7 this year.
The witness said the landing was ‘a shocking moment for all of us at the sunset bar on Maho Beach’, MailOnline reported. Maho Beach is famous for its proximity to the island’s airport, with tourists regularly watching planes making low-altitude landing approaches.
Unsurprisingly, the site is very popular with plane spotters. The local government warns those in the area not to get too close to arriving and departing aircraft because of the risk of suffering injury or even death.
