CHICAGO – A very tragic incident indeed for the family after his 6-year-old son shoot his younger brother.

The father, Michael Santiago, was arrested after his older son found a loaded revolver on top of a refrigerator and shot his younger brother, Eian, in the head, Reuters reports. Authorities claim the six-year-old got the gun to play “cops and robbers” while staying with their grandmother. The child was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he later died, the Chicago Tribune wrote.
Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that Santiago told authorities that he was a former member of a prominent Spanish gang and had bought the gun from another member to protect himself because he had testified against them in a murder trial, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Since he didn’t have a concealed carry license or a firearm owner I.D., cops are in the process of tracing the weapon.
The 25-year-old father is currently facing felony child endangerment charges and will appear in bond court Sunday.
