A Utah mother is devastated about the death of her 1 year old toddler who suffocated after crawling under a bean bag chair at a daycare, West Jordan Child Center. An unaware daycare worker sat on the bean bag to prepare for story time without knowing Leonardo Sanchez, aged 1, was hiding under it.
Danielle Sanchez, mother, doesn’t understand how the establishment could’ve lost track of her son and allowed this to happen. Based on current investigations, Leonardo was found under the beanbag chair 15 minutes before they realized he was missing. There were attempts to have the boy resuscitated but he was declared dead after he being transported to the hospital.
“How do you not feel him? How do you not hear him scream?”, said the boy’s mother, “Somebody dropped a ball and we have to bury a boy because of that.”
Although there were no charges filed against the unidentified employee, West Jordan Child Center on the other hand has had two violations in the last five years, including one incident where children were left unsupervised.
The management of the center released a statement regarding this unfortunate event,
“We regret deeply the tragic death of a young toddler at our daycare facility. No words adequately describe the depth of the sorrow we feel. And, of course, we do not pretend to understand how devastating this is for the family. We know the family well, we grieve with them, and we pray that God will provide them the comfort and peace they inevitably will need.”
Leonardo would’ve spent his second birthday on the day that is now his funeral.
