In 1995, Don was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. That said, Don needed to be attached to a ventilator, and he became mute. However, Lorraine, lived up to her wedding vows and never once left her husband’s side. Instead, she loved and cared for him, “in sickness and in health.” She became Don’s personal caretaker, but Don’s inability to communicate really hurt her but she did all the she could to help him recover.
When the people at Not Impossible labs heard of Don’s story, they knew they could help. Founder Mike Ebeling invented a device that would allow Don to speak with his eyes. The program could even simulate an audible voice. After 15 years of no communication, Don could finally tell his wife what was on his mind.
Don’s first words are absolutely touching. “My dear Lorraine, I can’t imagine life without you. You have made the last 25 years fly by and the last 20 with ALS bearable. I can’t wait for the next 20 with you. Love, Don.”
