A boy has tragically killed himself, after his girlfriend allegedly faked her death in a ‘suicide prank’ in the US. Charges are currently waiting for his 13-year-old girlfriend who allegedly faked her own suicide as a prank, prompting the 11-year-old to take his own life.
His devastated mother, Katrina Goss said she found her son, Tysen Benz, dead in his room on March 14. She told authorities that her son saw online posts and mobile phone messages that says his son’s girlfriend had committed suicide, however this wasn’t the case.
“She had pranked her own death. I don’t know what possessed her to do such a weird prank. It’s a twisted, sick joke”, Goss said.
Detroit Police Captain Michael Kohler said the unidentified juvenile would be charged in Marquette County with telecommunication services-malicious use and using a computer to commit a crime. Local police would not release the age of the unidentified girlfriend who was charged, neither would they comment on what relationship the person had with the boy.
Ms Goss alleged that when her son saw posts about his girlfriend’s death, he replied on social media that he was going to kill himself but no one had took his words seriously.
“The whole thing happened in about 40 minutes, he was fine and then I found him. I don’t know what she said she did to herself.”
“Social media harassment, bullying and pranking is a huge issue,” Ms Goss said, “The way it’s used nowadays, kids are de-sensitised to social media and it really does hurt people.”
“Our family is completely heartbroken. I urge families to speak out, reach out and communicate with your children about life’s precious gift and the dangers of the Internet and texting and how telecommunications can have the same effects as speaking face to face.”
