The family and friends of a teen who was stabbed by his classmate grieved Thursday and said he didn’t deserve to die.
Matthew McCree was stabbed to death Wednesday inside the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation in the Bronx because of bullying.
Close family friend Jonathan Wilson, who called McCree his nephew, said, “He loved playing basketball. He didn’t bother anybody. He loved playing music. He liked talking to girls. He was just a young good kid.”
The teenage suspect, Abel Cedeno, is accused of killing Matthew McCree and attempting to kill another inside a classroom on Wednesday. He was charged with murder and attempted murder, manslaughter and attempted manslaughter, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Another victim, Ariane LaBoy, 16, was still in the hospital and in critical condition.
The boys allegedly tossed pencils at 18-year-old Abel Cedeno in class Wednesday. That’s when Cedeno allegedly snapped and stabbed them with a switchblade.
NYPD Chief Robert Boyce said, “We got a complete statement from the individual, Abel Cedeno, and basically he said that it was the first time those two individuals, that he had a problem with.”
McCree’s mother denied the claim that his son engaged in bullying, “Matthew loved everyone,” Louna Dennis said. “Before Matthew, himself would be a bully, Matthew would rather beat a bully down.”
She described her son as wonderful.
“The morning before my son died, he made me my last breakfast,” she said, as she broke down in tears. “He forced me to eat breakfast because I was running late for work, and I had to force myself to eat it because he took the time out to make breakfast. Now, my son is never coming back.”
After the tragic incident, School Safety officers installed metal detectors at the school Thursday.
