The most incredible love stories cannot be found in movies. They are kept hidden in some people’s heart, which can’t be erased by death. A couple that was captured holding hands while they’re both in life support has one of the most touching stories ever.
Christopher Mininni was devastated when his dad, Jim Mininni, 58, was admitted to Kingston General Hospital in Ontario, Canada, on April 28, suffering from lung cancer.
The following day, another tragedy unfolded when Chris’s mom, Cindy, suffered a heart attack and was put on life support in another hospital.
The 21-year-old spent the next few days running back and forth and anxiously waiting for both of their prognosis.
“Me and my brother don’t drive so going between Kingston and Brockville was really rough,” their son Chris told news outlet. “We tried to get mom transferred to Kingston but no one could help us.”
Thankfully, Jim’s doctor was able to make it happen. His mom was transferred to the Kingston General, where his dad lay dying. She was put under sedation in the next room.
“I should’ve realized it wasn’t a good sign but I was so appreciative of what he did,” Chris said.
Jim, who had battled lung cancer three times over the last eight years, had a do-not-resuscitate order, and while at the hospital pulled out his breathing tube in the middle of a nightmare.
“He said, ‘If you can’t save me, don’t prolong my life,’” Chris recalled. “Because of his own wishes, we couldn’t put it back in.”
Throughout his suffering, Cindy remained sedated in the other room.
“We told him that mom was nowhere,” Chris added. “He started freaking out. But when we told him he wasn’t going to make it, he got out a pen and paper and tried to write because he wasn’t able to speak.”
“We didn’t know what was he trying to say,” says Chris. “We thought he was trying to write ‘mouth’ because it was very frustrating to him that he couldn’t speak.” But Jim was able to complete his message—it was simply “mom.” He wanted to see his beloved.
For the first time ever at the hospital, they placed one patient just off life support next to one on life support for a final goodbye.
“It was very risky but they did it for them,” said Chris.
When the doctors told Jim that he’d be able to see her, “he started bawling and saying thank you for doing the praying motion” and grabbed the doctors hand as hard as he could.
He was wheeled into Cindy’s room and although she was sedated, Jim got to say goodbye. It was a very touching moment – so their son decided to snap a photo of the couple as it was likely to be one of their last moments together on Earth.
“The one thing that encapsulates my dad in this lifetime is that he loved my mother with all of his beings,” he cited. “That’s why I love that photo so much – I feel like it shows it.”
Chris said he wanted to show his mom when she got out of the hospital that his dad was with her almost until his very last breath. “She wasn’t able to witness the power and love he was showing her, he said”
“When she woke up a few days later, the first thing she said was, ‘Is dad dead?’ ” says Chris.
Cindy, who is now making a full recovery, can’t recall the moment but Jim was able to hold her hand and cry.
After Chris took the photo, he shared it on Reddit, which immediately went viral. It received “beautiful comments from people all around the world.”
