This Is What Happens To Your Body After You Die… (Not For The Squeamish)

Where there’s life, there’s death. In life, there’s only one constant, and that ironically is death. No one can escape shackles of death, and while many people had near-death experiences, eventually they had to go too. These days, death isn’t that much of a mysterious phenomenon as it used to be and thanks to science, we can tell what can happen to a body after it’s void of all brain and heart activity. So today we’d like to show you things that can happen to your body after your death.

 1. Coffin birth

We start off with something which is by far the creepiest thing. According to Wiki, a pregnant woman can give birth to her child if the circumstances are right. This happens due to the bacteria generating gases, creating pressure inside which can lead to the baby being pushed out under the right circumstances.

2. Life flashing before your eyes

Ask anyone who had a near-death experience and chances are the person would recall the moment his/her entire life flashed in front. According to National Geographic, our minds can enter a “hyper state of perceptual neural activity” which essentially means that all the other centres such as vision, language etc. are gone, but the brain is still projecting imagery.

3. Body can be mummified

Yes, you can ask to be covered all by yourself with tape and liquids that slow the decomposition process, but we’re here to tell you that this can occur naturally too. If the human corpse is exposed to severe cold or extremely salty, alkaline soil, it can slow down the decomposition process and hence mummifying the corpse.

4. Bodies can moan after death

In our opinion, this is the scariest thing that can happen to a body after its death. As quoted in Men’s Health, sometimes when doctors are attempting to save a patient’s life, they pump extra air via the mouth, the air is trapped inside, and when someone, later on, applies pressure to lungs or stomach area, the air can move vocal chords and hence the moan.

5. Body can get an erection

Although the chances of having an erection post your death are pretty slim, it can happen. According to Men’s Health, if you die face down, blood can accumulate in your penis and it could lead to a not-so-powerful erection.

6. Bodies can explode

By explosion, we don’t mean a kind of explosion that’ll blow the roof off, but yes, definitely, the kind that’ll grab your or the person nearby’s attention. According to Vice, due to the accumulation of gases inside the casket, it can literally turn into a pressure cooker and could turn a body into brown sludge. And if the casket is opened, the body can actually explode! If one wants to avoid it, buy a casket which has appropriate ventilation so that the gases can escape.

7. Twitching

7. Twitching

By twitching, we mean normal twitching, not the sitting up straight, looking at the target with huge eyes, Undertaker style twitching. When a person is completely dead, the brain is still alive for some time and can fire off signals, resulting in twitching according to Men’s Health website.

8. Livor mortis

After one’s death, the heart isn’t pumping so blood cannot move inside the blood vessels, so it clogs. Due to clogging, the body’s colour turns into a purplish colour and this changing of colour is called Livor mortis.

9. Algor mortis

Algor mortis in simple words is changing of the body’s temperature to match the ambient temperature. When a dead body turns cold, it’s due to Algor Mortis.

10. Rigor mortis

Rigor mortis is stiffening of the corpse after the death. When the body dies, it’s being devoid of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is required for the muscles to relax. Because muscles contract, the body stiffens up. Source: Wiki

11. Hair and nails appear to grow

11. Hair and nails appear to grow

This is a common myth that a person’s hair and nails grow even after his/her death. The truth is, according to Medical Daily because the body is devoid of moisture, the skin retracts, exposing hair and nail right to the follicle. Hence they appear to have grown.

12. Pee and poo

12. Pee and poo

Death isn’t meant to be pretty, and no point is a testament to that than this one. When dying, your brain is shutting down, and hence it cannot control the involuntary responses such as the muscles that hold your bowels are loosening, and you can end up peeing and pooping.
