The media have described the actions of a former Chief Warrant Officer as “quiet heroic determination”.
Michael Siler was the pilot of MH-60L Direct Action Penetrator (DAPS) helicopters who was given the task to give a Delta Force ground raid in Syria, a close air support.
Reportedly, the army helicopter pilot kept flying for 5 hours to support the Delta Force ground raid into Syria in 2014. According to the documents released by the Pentagon, he didn’t give up even after he was shot and wounded during the initial assault.
He piloted during a classified nighttime mission in July 2014, “deep inside enemy territory”. During the raid, ISIS terrorists noticed the helicopter and opened fire, which left Siler wounded.
However, that didn’t prevent him from staying on the battlefield for five hours after that.
Reportedly, another Army Blackhawk helicopter pilot said for Business Insider : “Staying in the air with a wounded leg for five hours is no small feat, whether or not he’s on the controls,” stating, “That is pretty heroic.”
But as revealed in the Pentagon documents, he not only stayed in the air, but also “rained hell upon the ISIS jihadists” in an attempt to assist the Delta Force troops.
Michael Siler was the lead pilot during the raid which allegedly lasted ten hours. He “meticulously planned and flawlessly executed” his task.
The secret mission was revealed to the public abut a month or so later on August 20, 2014. According to Business Insider, an Army spokesman has confirmed that Siler is now a Chief Warrant Officer-5, and still serves with the 160th at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
And back in 2014, he was recognized as the Army Aviator of the Year.
