Before Sunday’s match-up between the Carolina Panthers and the Philadelphia Eagles, Eagles safety Eric Reid and Panthers safety Malcolm Jenkins got into a heated exchange spurred by the national anthem protests that ultimately required teammates and referees to separate the two. Protest founder and now ex-NFLer Colin Kaepernick tweeted his approval of Reid’s actions.
Reid, who was on the 49ers when Kaepernick started the protests and still refuses to stand for the anthem, has long held a grudge against Jenkins for his role in redirecting some of the protest energy into more direct action via a deal with the Players Coalition, which Jenkins co-founded. Jenkins, who endorses the cause behind the protests, agreed to stop the on-field protests if the league would invest about $100 million into social justice causes. For that, Reid has labeled Jenkins a “sellout.”
As the two teams went out on the field before the game Sunday, Reid and Jenkins began to jaw, a moment caught on camera. Things got tense enough that Reid’s teammates had to restrain him:

Of course, the internet went into a frenzy that even Colin Kaepernick took notice.
