Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) lashed out at President Donald Trump in a statement released Wednesday afternoon, blaming Trump for inflaming violent rhetoric among his supporters and condoning acts of violence.

The pair jointly condemned a statement from the president issued earlier in the day, expressing his concern over a series of suspected explosive devices sent to prominent Democrats, claiming that Trump’s words “ring hollow” in light of other statements the president has made in the past.

“We listened with great interest to the President’s remarks this afternoon. We all take an oath to support and defend the constitution and protect the American people, and that is our first responsibility,” Schumer and Pelosi said in the joint statement. “However, President Trump’s words ring hollow until he reverses his statements that condone acts of violence.”

“Time and time again, the President has condoned physical violence and divided Americans with his words and his actions,” the pair continued. “Expressing support for the Congressman who body-slammed a reporter, the neo-Nazis who killed a young woman in Charlottesville, his supporters at rallies who get violent with protestors, dictators around the world who murder their own citizens, and referring to the free press as the enemy of the people.”

Schumer and Pelosi neglected to mention (or condemn) incendiary language from prominent figures on the Left, including former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton who just last week told an audience that there was no need to be “civil” with members of the Republican party.
