As a fast-food chain, it usually is a true treat to dine at a Popeye’s. They just have a special way of doing their seasoning and serving up chicken and other food entrees that are unmatched. However, the chain is now going through some controversy, especially at one of their stores in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri. Apparently, there was a sign posted at this establishment that said that it “reserved the right to refuse service to white people.”
What Are the Details?
A photo of the alleged signed has been circulating on social media, and it was affixed to an area in the restaurant’s drive-through. The photograph of the sign was widely shared on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and it read, “Effective 6-1-21 this restaurant is now under new management and we will reserve the right to refuse service to white people. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Signed, General Manager, Mason.”
Because of the tremendous outcry on social media, the restaurant was ultimately forced to temporarily close as of last Wednesday.
According to KTVI-TV, Lake Saint Louis police said they believe that an individual likely posted this sign “unbeknownst to the business.” They added that according to Missouri statutes they are investigating this as an act of vandalism. Indeed, there have been separate incidents that occurred at that restaurant last May, and the cops are trying to determine if the two are related. Lt. Pat Doering of the Lake Saint Louis police department said that there was more damage other than just the sign. The earlier vandalism also had obscene messages put on the drive-through menu of this Popeye’s.
An official from the Lake Saint Louis police department stated, “We are currently investigating and working on a trespassing and a related vandalism case regarding the Popeye’s that is located at 6475 Ronald Reagan Drive in Lake Saint Louis. We noticed that earlier this month there were several drive-through menu signs at this location that had been spray-painted. We also were called regarding an incident today where someone posted an inappropriate sign on the drive-through menu, and the staff at this Popeye’s was completely unaware of that.”
An unidentified manager at this Popeye’s has confirmed that surveillance video has demonstrated that “an employee didn’t post the sign.” In a statement to KTVI, a representative with Popeye’s said, “We have been made aware of this situation and we are thoroughly investigating this matter right away. We want to reassure everyone that this type of behavior doesn’t align with the value of our brand and we take these allegations very seriously. This franchise is cooperating with local law enforcement regarding this continued investigation.”
