The January 6th anniversary is coming just days from now and while the Congressional Democrats are trying to punish their political opponents these three retired U.S. generals warned in a chilling column on Friday that America’s divided military could fuel a new civil war if there’s another coup attempt after the 2024 election.
Here’s what Former Army Major Gen Paul Eaton, former Brigadier Gen Steven Anderson, and former Army Major Gen Antonio Taguba wrote in a statement:
“We are chilled to our bones at the thought of a coup succeeding next time,” the article said. As the first anniversary of the deadly riots at the US Capitol approaches, the two retired major generals and a retired brigadier general voiced their concerns about a divided American military.
“On January 6, a disturbing number of veterans and active-duty members of the military took part in the attack on the Capitol,” they said. And they are suggesting history will repeat again, noting, “In a contested election, with loyalties split, some might follow orders from the rightful commander in chief,” while others might follow the loser.
They emphasized: ‘The military and lawmakers have been gifted hindsight to prevent another insurrection from happening in 2024 – but they will succeed only if they take decisive action now’ they also recommended that all January 6th leaders, including President Trump, be prosecuted for their supposed ‘crimes’ in plotting the unrest. No one who participated in the January 6th protests been charged with the insurrection act.
Though some of the Republicans like Liz Cheney made a turncoat and sided with Democrats in their authoritarian plot Rep. Matt Gaetz joined other Republicans in calling out Democratic overreach last week.
Gaetz said in a statement:
“It’s been 174 days since my colleagues and I sent a letter to Director Wray asking basic questions about the FBI’s involvement on January 6th. Americans should not be languishing in hideous, unconstitutional conditions waiting for basic answers like this. Waiting for basic answers on evidence. Waiting for basic answers on counsel. This report must be a guidepost for ongoing Republican oversight effort in Congress… We are going to take power after this next election. When we do, it’s not going to be the days of Paul Ryan, and Trey Gowdy, and no real oversight, and no real subpoenas. It’s going to be the days of Jim Jordan, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Dr. Gosar, and myself.”
