The slap heard around the world is still topping the charts on social media as people are intensely debating if it was real or fake.
In case you missed it, Sunday night was the Oscars award show. You know where the glitterati all get together to pat each other on the back and also talk down to the American people.
At any rate, Will Smith became so upset with host Christ Rock’s joke about his wife’s shaved head that he walked right up on the stage and slapped Rock across the face.
Right after the slap, Smith continued to shout at Rock, demanding he keeps his wife’s name out of his “f**king mouth.”
Many people are rallying around Smith saying that he did the right thing, but then there are others who disagree with his violent actions.
Then there are those that feel bad for Chris Rock who handled the uncomfortable situation as well as he could.
Either way, the Oscars announced they would be launching a “formal review” of the incident and condemned Smith’s actions.
Many insiders believed Smith would likely lose his “Best Actor” award for what he did.
On Monday afternoon, the Academy said in a statement, “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”
In addition, the Academy shared the organization’s Standards of Conduct that “provide an ethical framework for Academy members.” “Members should act in a manner consistent with the good reputation of the Academy,” the Academy stated.
As listed in the document, unacceptable conduct includes “physical contact that is uninvited and, in the situation, inappropriate and unwelcome.”
Shortly after all of this, Will Smith suddenly decided to apologize to Chris Rock on Instagram:
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.
