A serial shoplifter with 122 prior offenses was released on his own recognizance in a move that a detective with the NYC Police Department called “f**king insane,” as New York’s infamous cashless bail system continues to foster an atmosphere of lawlessness in the Big Apple.

However, in this case, the absurdity of the situation has driven even the office of the Manhattan’s left-leaning District attorney, Alvin Bragg, to wish that the suspect could have been detained for his trial, but said their hands are tied.
Bragg said in a statement on June 17. Soft-on-crime DA allegedly assured them that they would begin cracking down on such theft, “We cannot accept a system where individuals who shoplift again and again cycle in and out of jail, just to shoplift again,’’ Bragg said.
Lorenzo McLucas, 34, was found in possession of a pipe that had crack cocaine residue in it when he was arrested on Wednesday for shoplifting items from the cosmetics counter at a Duane Reade store on Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, according to police.
However, despite DA Bragg’s recent declaration that his office intends to step up prosecution in relation to the ongoing shoplifting plague in NYC, the suspect was released back onto the streets the very same day of his arrest.
Since an NYC judge can only order suspects accused of this kind of misdemeanor detained if they have other pending cases against them, McLucas’ arrest marks the suspect’s 50th arrest in 2022 alone.
However, despite this shocking statistic, the suspect remarkably had no open cases against him, raising the question of how or if he was in any way penalized for his previous 49 arrests this year.
A veteran NYPD detective was asked for their opinion on McLucas’ release after his nth arrest for the same crime by the New York Post, and when asked about the city’s extremely lax criminal laws, they weren’t holding back.
“It’s f**king ridiculous,’’he said. “They just keep letting him out, and he does the same thing again. I feel so bad for the people who own retail stores. What’s the purpose anymore?”
