Last year, in May, Raquel Davis, a mother of seven kids, unsurprisingly has a lot on her plate since the COVID-19 pandemic started. Davis now not only has seven children, but she also has seven children who live at home with her full-time. And because of this, she always favored outdoor play.
The kids would skateboard around the neighborhood the majority of the time. And as most adults are aware, it can be quite noisy when there are seven kids around.
Davis’ neighbors, meanwhile, were not very happy with all the additional commotion and insisted they could hear the children clearly inside their homes. The police have been called on her family at least three times in the past few months, without even going to Davis first.
“So now that it’s with my kids and cops are being called on them, I don’t really know how to resolve this when they’re just skateboarding,” Davis said.
What did her neighbors expect? They were kids, after all. Kids, who were simply skateboarding on a public road.
Since the children only skateboard during the day, Davis didn’t understand why it was a big deal. “I didn’t know it was not OK for kids to be outside skateboarding,” Davis added, saying that she even had to discipline her children in front of her neighbor after numerous complaints.
Despite this, Davis said the neighbor still appeared upset and the neighbors kept on filing their complaints.
But the mother of seven from California has raised eyebrows, Davis had had enough.
She believed she was forced to act passive-aggressively against her neighbors and erected a sizable sign in her yard. “This neighborhood is full of Karens,” the sign declared.
The term “Karen,” which denotes an irate, entitled, or demanding lady, first appeared last year.
“They’re [my children] out skateboarding and I guess I was at my final straw. My last thing. I don’t know what to do so I put up the sign,” Davis said.
One of Davis’ sons had reportedly been harassed by some persons who had complained about the “Karen” sign and demanded that it be taken down.
“These folks moved in and it’s basically the Animal House house in the neighborhood,” one neighbor, Bruce Foster, told the broadcaster. “There is like no sense of noise control.”
Although he noted that he hadn’t called the police, he said that the noise had been going on for some time.
However, Davis believed that she was stuck in that situation and had no other option
“That’s why I came to this because I don’t know what else to do. I don’t know who’s calling,” she said, “ I keep my kids in past dark. I don’t know what to do.”
