An FBI employee in Utah was arrested last week and charged with molesting five young girls.

Law enforcement officials arrested 65-year-old Robert Alexander Smith after a young girl told her mom in June that Smith had allegedly forced her to touch him inappropriately under his clothes in 2020 when she was 6 or 7 years old, according to KSL-TV.

The complainant spoke with other young girls who were in close contact with Smith, each of whom began crying when asked if anything inappropriate happened with him.

Authorities with the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into allegations from the girl, as well as four other girls, whose ages ranged from preteen to high-school aged.

According to reports, Smith was arrested Wednesday at his home in Stansbury Park and faces four 1st-degree felony counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, four class-A misdemeanor counts of lewdness involving a child, and two class-B misdemeanor counts of lewdness.

“We are aware of the arrest of an FBI employee. The FBI takes allegations of misconduct very seriously. As such, the incident has been referred to the FBI’s Internal Affairs Section. We cannot comment further on an ongoing personnel matter,” the agency said in a statement.

As of now, it was unclear what Smith’s exact responsibilities were at the FBI.
