In Detroit, squatting is a huge problem – and as we learned there’s a bold Detroit squatter who taught she’s having the best time of her life for squatting someone else house. And she’s quite proud of it.
Sarah Hamilton owns a Detroit home and was planning on selling it – until squatter Lynn Williams moved into the place. Sarah claims that she has been threatened with a knife and the squatter was able to get Sarah arrested after claiming that she tried to run her over.
Through the help of a local reporter, Charlie LeDuff, the real homeowner, Sarah wanted him to interview the squatter, to learn more about their motives, and intentions – and to catch them at a disadvantage.
LeDuff accepted the keys to the house from the true owner and set out to confront the shameless squatter. The person was living on Sarah Hamilton-Gilmer’s property although they were not paying for anything. They did refuse to leave.
The reporter wasn’t there to just get the scoop, though. He had something else in mind that Williams never expected. After meeting with Hamilton and her attorney to get the keys and the proper paperwork required to enter the property, LeDuff headed over to give Williams a taste of her own medicine, quickly turning the tables on the squatter. And, of course, cameras were there to capture it all as it unfolded.
According to reports, Williams had been on probation at the time of the incident after she was arrested for a felony assault with a deadly weapon. That’s why LeDuff came to the property with a battalion of police officers to back him up. Williams scared him, as she did the property’s true owner.
When LeDuff showed Williams the deed, she seemed interested in letting him into the home. That was until LeDuff said, “Let me into my house.”
To say the squatter was dismayed by the request is a bit of an understatement. Right away, the entitled intruder put up a stink. “Let you in ‘your house’? This is Lynn Williams’ house,” she incredulously declared.
But, LeDuff wasn’t about to back down. He pressed Williams, asking why she felt that she had the right to live in a home that wasn’t hers and that she hadn’t received permission from the owner to occupy.
“I’m not the only one that is squatting. It’s a lot of other people on the block if you want to be technical,” alleged Williams, who seemed cordial enough as they chatted on Hamilton’s front porch but has a criminal history for felonious assault with a deadly weapon. “And a lot of people encouraged me to do what I’m doing now,” she added.
Police then arrive and see that Williams has been stealing electricity through illegal wiring. In a matter of moments, LeDuff’s investigation turns into the arrest of Williams and her sudden eviction from the property.
