Texas woman Lauren Perkins always dreamt of being a mom. After spending an exhausting year trying to conceive, the thought of fertility treatments seemed so daunting. She and her husband decided to embark on a mission trip to Nicaragua to think about their next steps.
The couple made many friends during their trip and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. While there, Lauren mustered up the courage to talk openly about her struggles to get pregnant.
After hearing her story, one of her friends, a priest, told her that God had big plans for her and she would soon receive pleasant news. Lauren admitted she was surprised by the priest’s strange announcement at the time.
After the trip, the couple returned home to Texas. Lauren said she didn’t think much about what the priest had said. Instead, she and David decided to try artificial insemination. Still, the woman said she was convinced it wouldn’t change anything.
The Perkinses were about to give up on their dream of having children when they received delightful news, Lauren was pregnant. During her first routine check-up, she was told by nurses that her HCG levels were very high.
That meant there was a strong likelihood that Lauren was pregnant with more than one child. The couple had gone through so many roadblocks that the mere idea of having twins or triplets sounded too far-fetched.
Lauren and her husband assumed they would have twins or triplets, and that seemed overwhelming. The biggest surprise came during their first ultrasound.
After studying the screen for a while, the doctor announced: “I just counted 5.” Lauren’s immediate thought? That’s not possible!
“Hold on,” the doctor said. “I just found a sixth one.”
The confused couple stared at the screen in complete shock. Six!
Lauren and David were then faced with a difficult decision; either they could reduce the number of children, or keep them all.
The chances that all six babies would survive the pregnancy were low. To have six at the same time brings on a number of dangerous complications.
After much deliberation, Lauren and David finally decided to give all six a fighting chance.
Their doctors promised to do everything they could to ensure every baby was delivered safely. The hospital went through a mighty effort to avoid complications associated with the birth.
