The United States Drug Enforcement Administration has issued a public safety advisory informing people about the widespread danger posed by fentanyl combined with xylazine, also known as “tranq,” a common name for this type of animal tranquilizer.
According to DEA Administrator Ann Milgram, xylazine is making fentanyl, our country’s deadliest drug threat, even deadlier. The DEA has discovered xylazine and fentanyl combinations in 48 of the 50 states.
According to the DEA, users of xylazine and fentanyl-containing drugs are more likely to die from a lethal drug overdose.
As a sedative and painkiller, animals are given the FDA-approved medication xylazine. It has the potential to significantly reduce breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature.
Human side effects are similar to those commonly associated with opiate use, and they can be serious and even fatal. Despite this, the DEA warns that, unlike opioids, naloxone or Narcan cannot be used to reverse xylazine’s effects.

However, the DEA stated that experts always recommend giving naloxone to anyone who appears to be suffering from drug poisoning.
One of Tranq’s side effects is the development of ulcers in various body regions, which may result in the amputation of fingers or entire limbs in rare cases. Some experts believe that xylazine was illegally added to the human drug supply in order to prolong the effects of fentanyl and heroin.
According to DEA data, xylazine-positive overdose deaths increased across the country from 2020 to 2021, though it is unclear when such deaths were recorded.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 107,735 Americans died from drug poisonings between August 2021 and August 2022, with synthetic opioids like fentanyl accounting for 66% of those deaths.
Mexican drug gangs manufacture fentanyl in secret labs south of the border in Mexico using chemicals imported from China.
The FDA announced last month that it would restrict xylazine imports, which means that shipments of the animal tranquilizer will be scrutinized more closely. Loads of the medicine and the materials used to make it may also be held to ensure that they are intended for legal use.
