As the City of Brotherly Love reached a seven-figure settlement with Black Lives Matter protesters over “physical and emotional injuries,” victimhood translated into substantial profits.
When George Floyd died in police custody in 2020, both lockdown rules and legal requirements were broken within a week in the name of social justice.
In Philadelphia, a large number of protesters were obstructing traffic on a major expressway, prompting a police intervention to put an end to the chaos.
The illegal protest was dispersed off I-676 using non-lethal weapons such as tear gas and pepper spray, and the activists will now receive a $9.25 million payout.
A lawsuit filed on behalf of 343 protestors claimed they had suffered “physical and emotional damage” as a result of the city’s response to civil unrest and demonstrations, and the city announced on Monday that the litigation had been settled.

The office of Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (D) issued a statement explaining that the Accord would award the 343 Plaintiffs a total of $9.25 million. A grant will also provide Bread & Roses Community Fund with $500,000 to $600,000 for free mental health treatment for West Philadelphia residents.
When Kenney waived all of the charges against the protesters, the figure comes close to $27,000 per protester. “My decision to forgive these infractions is not a statement on the legitimacy of the specific citations,” he said at the time. Instead, it is a recognition of the fundamental issues that prompted thousands of people to rally in Philadelphia.
According to Monday Kenney, a legacy of systemic racism and police violence against Black and Brown Philadelphians has left unimaginable anguish and trauma. Commutations were granted to roughly twice as many demonstrators as were named in the class action complaint.

We believe that, while only the first step toward reconciliation, this agreement will assist some individuals in healing from the harm they experienced in their West Philly communities and during protests on I-676 in 2020.

“After many years of negotiation, we are convinced that this settlement will provide the plaintiffs with a chance to move past the events of May 31 and June 1 and recover,” City Solicitor Diana Cortes said. We appreciate that the Bread & Roses Community Fund will be able to provide affected residents with mental health therapy as part of the settlement terms.
According to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw, the large protests held in Philadelphia and across the country in response to George Floyd’s death were unprecedented in size. The Philadelphia Police Department is a learning organization dedicated to positive and useful progress.
“We will work nonstop to improve what we police do with local, state, and community partners to safeguard the first amendment rights of demonstrators, keep our communities and officers safe, and ultimately show that we are dedicated to a better standard,” Outlaw continued.
The lawsuit claimed that “the New York City Police Department arrested and charged the protesters without probable cause and subjected them to excessive force as part of a planned action involving some of the NYPD’s most senior members,” CNN reported. According to the terms of the agreement, the city may agree to pay at least $21,500 to more than 300 protesters.
The protesters have been given six months to accept or reject the settlement regarding the arrests on June 4, 2020.
